Porcelain Veneers FAQ
Wondering about the best way to remake your smile? Your head is probably spinning with all the options ahead. Elkhart Dental Center will do whatever we can to help you figure out the best path.
For many patients, the ideal cosmetic option is both simple and dramatic. Porcelain veneers encompass these factors to bring about a more beautiful smile without requiring serious patient commitment.
Getting Acquainted with Porcelain Veneers
Can I get veneers to whiten my teeth?
Veneers offer new tooth surfaces to your smile. They are incredibly thin shells of porcelain, and bond over your natural teeth. Once in place, they look and feel like a part of the rest of the tooth. If you’ve struggled to whiten in the past, but haven’t seen a significant change, then veneers could be ideal. Dr. Lee will choose veneers that are slightly brighter than your natural teeth, and apply them to your entire smile. The result is permanent whitening – no need for touch ups or maintenance.
Will veneers help with sensitivity?
Because veneers build up your teeth, they’re a wonderful method for limiting tooth sensitivity. Patients with worn enamel find that it’s uncomfortable to eat or drink hot and cold liquids. They may also be more anxious during dental treatment, and hesitant to schedule exams. Veneers can change this entirely, by protecting the vulnerable portions of the teeth. Say goodbye to ongoing twinges.
How long do veneers last?
This depends on the location of the veneers, and the way you care for them. The porcelain material is strong, but it’s not indestructible. Veneers typically last between 10-20 years, but can last longer with superb care.
How should I take care of my new veneers?
Treat your veneers as you do your other teeth – but with a little extra respect. Many of us put our teeth up against forces that just aren’t fair. Your enamel can’t handle everything that’s thrown its way. If you have a problem with teeth grinding or if you frequently use your teeth as tools, the veneers could chip or break. Wear a night guard, and don’t use your teeth for anything other than eating.
Additionally, you should brush and floss consistently and thoroughly. Keeping your teeth healthy will help the veneers prevail.
What is the veneer procedure like?
Porcelain veneers are incredibly thin, but there will likely still be some tooth prep required. Once you have decided on veneers, Dr. Lee will reduce the tooth structure slightly so that the veneers fit over your natural teeth. Impressions of your prepared teeth will be sent to a dental lab, where porcelain veneers will be fabricated to fit them. You’ll then return to the office for another appointment, and Dr. Lee will bond your new veneers in place.
Depending on how much tooth is prepped, we may place temporary veneers to fill out your smile between appointments. These will be removed before the new veneers are bonded on.
Will my veneers be noticeable?
Porcelain is incredibly similar to natural enamel – it looks and feels like the real thing. The shade of your veneers will also be matched to your surrounding teeth, so your veneers won’t be recognizable as dental work. Soon, even you will forget that you have veneers in your smile.
